Few parsnips on Parsnip Day

What we've known for a long time there are few parsnips about in early October. It might be an old tale but parsnips appear after the first frosts, usually at the end of October, or even later (global warming who knows?). Something to do with the cold snap making them taste better.

Consolation in the bargain of the festival going to Barbakan and buying a 400g Polish Black Bread loaf for 6p. 1964 prices wouldn't that be 1 shilling, 1 and a halfpenny. Not sure i can work out old money. Struggle with degree F since moving to degree C.

For future reference, 6p in old money is one and thruppence. My granny taught me how to work it out years ago, you divide by five to get the shillings, then multiply the remaining pence by two and add one. That's why an old sixpence was 2.5p!
