News from the Manchester Food & Drink Festival
The dates have changed. It now starts on the 1st October and ends 14th October. There is money from the City Council, it's not all going on the Commonwealth Games.
Where do they get the energy?

A picture of the Prime Minister Tony Blair with some frothy pints and a story that pubs can open during the World Cup if they've got big screen telly. 2002 and pubs have got to win court cases to open for trade. Marvellous!

It's been around for a century but getting a room of people to agree about Marmite would take for never. This is from the .Net magazine Food Forum. The online equivalent of tin pot local radio doing a sad late night phone in.I was clearing my kitchen cupboard out last weekend, and I came across a dark, mouldy jar of a sticky green goo. Upon closer obervation it appeared to be an ancient tub of Marmite. Urgh . Gross. Of course, this sparked off the obvious question. Love it or hate it? - I can't stand it!!

I have to say I use a supermarket own brand version, and it is luscious Marmite(ish) forever!
Marge
Nasty. I like my yeast involved in the fermentation process.
Everything for the sad, lonely, beer-fuelled men out there.

Don't come crying to us when she gets a yeast infection.
That's when we get the yoghurt out....

My family is split some love some hate.
My 3 year old loves it so much, most of the time she smells like marmite.

It's meant to be quite good for you!! I have a rather weird friend who eats it on broccoli with his sunday roast!! Dodgy Geeza.
Rutty... ...You are one cool guy!!
Anyway, back to work (erm well, fragging on UT), and a good cuppa english tea.

Oh yeah - this as well, I found this piece of information on my daily net explorations. Enjoy!!
Experiments: "Things To Do With Marmite"
We've been conducting some scientific tests on various objects in recent weeks, and we'd love you to join in on these mass observation experiments. This week we're experimenting on... Marmite! Our researchers have concluded that Marmite has many useful and interesting alternative uses, such as the following:
1. Aftershave
2. Sun cream
3. Marmite grenades
4. Mix with nitro-glycerine and feed to kangaroos (stand well back)
5. For covering lightbulbs so they give off black light
6. Glue
7. Aphrodisiac
8. Fast, long-lasting and attractive alternative to sun-bed treatments (or use exterior wood stain instead).

I like it, but only used sparingly otherwise it makes me feel sick. Vegemite is nicer

Seeds of Italy
Will these grow here? Italy has a diverse climate, with very cold weather and snow in the alpine North, and hot weather in the South, Sicily and Sardegna so we have varieties to suit a wide range of climates. Tomato seed germinates from 10C upwards whether you are in Siberia or Saint Lucia after all, and so long as you treat the varieties the same way you would treat a similar domestic one you already grow, they will prosper. Some people think that it's too late to plant anything after Easter !! But you still have plenty of time as this Easter has been unusually early.

BBC - Food - Food Diary
Who can compete with the BBC for telling you it's going be National Sandwich Week or National School Meals Week and other events across the country.
Meanwhile we're off to Carvoeiro in Portugal, only 19 degrees at the moment for a five day workshop on Carob Development - including Carob A Mystical Biblical Food - Discuss ? Or will it just lying about reading slab novels and filling glasses with anything alcoholic. Check the web link mentioned for a webcam picture outside the cafe.

Stockport & Manchester Mild Challenge
6th April thru 12th May 2002
Okeh it's not the fashionable drink it was. It's in danger of becoming extinct. So to help keeping one of Britain's traditional beers alive Camra (Campaign For Real Ale) with sponsorship from the Stockport Express are doing a bit of promo work. Win a t-shirt if you drink 12 pints or half pints of mild. You have to go to twelve participating pubs to do it though. Chorlton has only one - Marble Beer House. After that you'll have to turn up in places like Didsbury (Fletcher Moss or The Gateway for Hydes Light) and then a tour of Robinson's pubs and other outlets that get in the Camra Good Beer Guide. Pick Up a Card to get the stamp to prove you've done it. That means getting to one of those pubs - The Rain Bar, Lass O'Gowrie, Beer House in the city centre for instance.

The History of Pasta -at the National Museum of Pasta Foods
An amusing place to visit when in Rome because when we went around it was so strict. Overlooked by the caretaker guide who made you sure you checked all the ehibits carefully. A bit like the old soviet museums with the stern lady making sure you didn't stray from the designated path. What did we learn? We spaghetti used to be eaten with the hand, because it pre-dates the fork. Some great prints of 17th Century locals in Naples dropping long strands into their mouth with the head tilted backwards.

The Patatas Bravas don't cut it ?
I thought it was maybe an off night in the tapas bar - near The Bar and the Bean Counter on the bridge opposite Safeway. However several of my comrades reported that the food is about average on their nights there. The bench mark dish is patatas bravas. You have to pretty sloppy to mess up a potato dish and serving boiled spuds in tomato sauce is messing it up big style. I know we Brits don't handle tapas like they do back in their homeland. We treat it more like a restaurant instead of a nibble, a beer, chitty chat and move on. But that's no excuse for serving what you can get away with. For how long? That's up to the consumers of Chorlton. On past evidence for a very long time.

THE NATIONAL DANDELION COOKOFF !!
MAY 3 & 4, 2002
Could your dandelion recipe be worth $500?
If you enter this year's National Dandelion Cookoff and your dandelion dish wins top prize, you could walk away from Breitenbach Wine Cellars in Dover, Ohio with your wallet or purse that much fatter!! The Cookoff is part of the 9th Annual Dandelion MayFest which will happen on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4, 2002 at the famous winery.
"Each year, recipes pour in from around the country from people who love dandelions," says Dr. Peter Gail, author of the Dandelion Celebration: the Guide to Unexpected Cuisine and founder of the Cookoff. "There is fierce, but healthy competition."
It's in Cleveland, Ohio. Now the danedelions are out - get them in them on the plate. mmm, all the info is here

Bean Counter Hits One

The Bean Counter - the Veggie Deli & Soup Bar on Wilbraham Road celebrated it's first birthday party last night. Our ever sociable reporter was there, and in the Bar next door, and then the Marble Beer House - finishing of with a bag of chips at the chippy off Chorlton Green. All this on school night as well. Congratulations all round and a tired day at work today
